MARTHA JOHNSON PATTERSON

MARTHA JOHNSON PATTERSON
daughter of Andrew Johnson 1865-1869

Martha acted as First Lady in place of her invalid mother.

Her calm diplomatic tact made her a valuable asset to her father during his rather stormy administration. Martha Patterson modestly said of her family: "We are plain people, from the mountains of Tennessee, called here for a short time by a national calamity. I trust too much will not be expected of us."
