SARA CHILDRESS POLK

SARA CHILDRESS POLK
wife of James K. Polk 1845-1850

In 1845, a lady would never admit to a political role of her own. However, Mrs. Polk, with a keen mind as well as social skills, was very interested in politics. She accompanied her husband to Washington whenever she could.

She was constantly but privately helping her husband with his speeches, copying his correspondence, and giving him advice. Many said she was the President through him. She allowed no drinking, smoking, or dancing in the White House.
